Horticultural and agronomic services since 1984.
I'm a graduate of Oklahoma State University where I earned BSc and MSc degrees in horticulture. My undergraduate work was geared to greenhouse and nursery production while my graduate work focused on tree fruit and pecan nut production.
Following college, I worked in a bi-county assignment for Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service as the Extension Horticulture Agent in Muskogee County and Extension Agriculture Agent in McIntosh County, eventually serving on a project as District Horticulturist for 21 counties in Northeast Oklahoma.
I moved to Missouri to manage a certified organic farm and develop a sustainable agriculture demonstration center. It provided hands-on experience with farm-scale composting, cover crops and green manures, organic fertility and and weed control systems, fruit and vegetable production, and certified organic farm inspections.
When NCAT's (National Center for Appropriate Technology) project known as the ATTRA - National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service moved from Tennessee to Fayetteville, Arkansas, I joined the program where I was an Agriculture Specialst for 18 years. During this time, I traveled, lectured, and provided consultancy in every region of the United States as well as Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, Russia, India, the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland regarding organic and sustainable farming systems.
I purchased an 11.5 farm in Northwest Arkansas where I grew a quarter acre garden, largely to try out different market farming techniques that I observed on farm tours and visits. These techniques can be applied to small- and large-scale market farming and include soil fertility, weed control, mulching systems, pest management, foliar fertilization, eco-agriculture, biodynamics, and equipment setups geared to scale of production.
I relocated to Texas to work as R&D Scientist/Agricultural Consultant with Sustainable Growth Texas, LLC. This work involved extensive laboratory analysis for soils and composts, manufacturing liquid compost extracts and microbial inoculants, research collaborations with USDA and Texas A&M, and formulating bio-fertility systems to manage farms and landscapes.
In the Fall of 2010, I established Agri-Horticultural Consulting as an independent consultancy firm which serves farmers, landowners, and government agencies with horticultural, agronomic, and environmental services. My clients include commercial vegetable growers, urban farmers, pecan orchards and vineyards, ranchers, home gardeners, and government agencies and municipalities. I also teach workshops (see Events).
